Trendy student-friendly hangouts in Edinburgh

Feb 5, 2019

Looking for a new hangout in the Scottish capital? Trying to de-stress post-exam season? Head to these trendy student-friendly hangout spots in Edinburgh:

Brew Lab

Edinburgh’s “first artisan coffee bar”. Brew Lab opened in 2012, by two former students on the site of an of an old Uni building.

Four years of tinkering and perfecting went into getting the optimum coffee blend, and the team at Brew Lab believe they’ve brewed it.

Opens late into the evening too, with delicious boards of cheese and meat on offer, alongside a selection of craft beer and wines.

6-8 South College Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9AA (brewlabcoffee)

The Elephant House Ltd

This cosy café’s claim to fame has made it one of the city’s most popular spots.

First opened in 1995, it was here that Harry Potter first took to the page, with J.K. Rowling penning the early novels in the back room. The Elephant House offers an array of teas and coffees, using locally brewed Arabica beans for the best-tasting blend.

If you were wondering where the name comes from, it’ll be the 600 or so model elephants that call the place home.

21 George IV Bridge, Edinburgh, EH1 1EN (elephanthouse)

The Turkish Baths

Chill out after a revision binge at Edinburgh’s very own Turkish style bathhouse. Hidden away in Portobello Swim Centre, this authentic steam experience is the ideal antidote to exam season.

Give yourself enough time to hit the big three: steam room, sauna, and icy plunge pool.

57 Promenade, Edinburgh, EH1 2BS (portobelloswim)

Cameo Picturehouse

This charming ode to the art of the motion picture is one of the oldest still working cinemas in Scotland.

First opened in 1914, Cameo is an important venue on the Edinburgh culture circuit and should be your first port of call for snuggling down for a film on a Sunday afternoon.

38 Home Street, EH3 9LZ (cameopicturehouse)

Maison de Moggy

Love coffee? Love cats? (and who doesn’t by the way) Then Maison de Moggy is the hangout for you. Scotland’s first cat café, and home to some of the cutest kitties in town.

Make friends with the café’s feline stars and get a few stellar selfies for your ‘Gram page whilst you’re at it.

The coffee and cakes are just as wonderful as the resident moggies.

17 West Port, EH1 2JA (maisondemoggy)

Ting Thai Caravan

Reminisce about those ‘Gap Yar’ memories at this authentic Thai street food spot. The long communal seating benches recreate the shared atmosphere of traditional Thai joints.

A favourite with the city’s students thanks to its ultra-low prices, hearty portions and delicious blends of Asian-infused flavours.

Teviot Place, Edinburgh, EH1 2RA (tingthaicaravan)

Panda & Sons

A cool as they come cocktail bar hidden in the store cupboard of an Edinburgh barber shop. Panda & Sons has garnered quite a name for itself since first opening its doors in 2013, with an awards-list as long as a panda’s arm (is it an arm, or a leg?).

This happening venue is kitted out in true speakeasy style, resembling a cross between a Chicago Prohibition pad and a Scottish hunting lodge.

The drinks aren’t half bad either, with an innovative list of uniquely named cocktails on offer. If you’re on the lookout for something special, then Panda & Sons should be your first port of call on an evening.

79 Queen Street, Eh2 4NF (pandaandsons)

OX184

A craft-beer aficionados heaven, OX184 is an American style drinking den with enough beverages to keep even the most dedicated of tasters amused for hours.

A student favourite, the menu features Yankee classics, pub grub and fresh takes on a few stalwarts. Nestled away in the heart of Edinburgh’s old cattle market (hence, the name), Ox serves food until the wee hours.

184-186 Cowgate, EH1 1JJ (ox184)
