The Essential Guide to Hogmanay 2019 in Edinburgh

Dec 12, 2018

Join over 100,000 other revellers for a night to remember at Edinburgh‘s annual Hogmanay celebrations.

Hogmanay is back, and this time it promises to be a bigger party than ever before!

For three days, the party takes over the streets of Edinburgh for the biggest celebration of its kind in the world.

A stacked schedule of events brings together live music, performance, processions and fireworks into one unforgettable event that ensures 2018 goes out with a bang.

Torchlight Procession – 30 December 2017, 7PM

The party begins in earnest on 30 December with a torchlit procession through the city streets. Thousands of candle-bearers snake their way down the Royal Mile, passing some of Edinburgh’s most iconic buildings, accompanied by a fanfare of pipers and drummers.

This year, the procession will culminate around 14 stunning wicker sculptures, each representing a region of Scotland and created by talented young artists, bringing Scotland’s Year of the Young People 2018 to a dramatic close. Once the procession reaches Holyrood Park, a dazzling fireworks display will end the ceremony.

Tickets are available for those keen to take part, or you can simply join the crowds basking in the torch glow and watch the ceremony unfurl.

Symphonic Ibiza then brings some of the biggest dance tunes from the past 20 years to the Scottish capital courtesy of island-legend DJ Andy Joyce and a 20 piece live orchestra. Tickets for this unique take on the house music scene can be found here.

New Year’s Eve – 31 December, 1PM Onwards

Things kick off bright and early on NYE with a toddlers and parents-only Baby Loves Disco Hogmanay party at Festival Square. Ensure the little ones get to enjoy the celebrations too, with two hours of dancing and kid-friendly games.

The family-friendly fun continues with the returning Bairns Afore event. There are fireworks, music and a special appearance by some very special Disney favourites.

At 7PM, the party begins in earnest as the festivities take to the streets for one of the biggest outdoor parties on the planet.

As midnight approaches

There’s a variety of parties to choose from. Dance the night away in traditional Ceilidh style under the shadow of Edinburgh Castle at the aptly named Ceilidh under the Castle from 830PM .

Or you could join Scottish rockers Franz Ferdinand at the huge Concert in the Gardens event in West Princes Street Gardens. The Mercury Prize-winning five-tet will be joined by electro-stars Metronomy and the Glasgow-based Free Love.

The action culminates as you wave goodbye to 2018 at the stroke of midnight, as a huge fireworks display welcomes in the New Year with a bang.

New Year’s Day

The party doesn’t stop there though, with New Year’s Day playing host to the hilarious, annual Loony Dook.

Tickets for taking part are already sold out, but you can still make your way down to the Firth of Forth to watch all those brave, hungover folk dunking themselves into the freezing water in the name of charity.

Hogmanay 2019 promises to be the best yet. Be sure to wrap up warm and head on over to take part in the world’s biggest and best NYE celebrations.
