The Essential Guide to Christmas in Windsor & Maidenhead

Nov 20, 2018

Unpack the perfect start to the festive period with a fantastic calendar of events celebrating Christmas in Windsor and Maidenhead.

We owe many of our Christmas traditions to the Royal Borough with many crediting Queen Victoria and Prince Albert with popularising the festive Christmas Tree, a German tradition that had been introduced to the UK by Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III in the late 1700’s.

Naturally then, where better to begin your celebration of the yuletide period than the home of the royal family?

The Big Switch On

Start the countdown to Christmas at Maidenhead’s big Christmas Lights switch on. The party begins at 4.30PM on November 24 outside the Town Hall, with plenty of entertainment and festive fun for all the family on offer.

The Lights’ display surges into life at 6PM, following an official countdown.

Meet the Man himself

Old St Nick himself will be heading to Windsor (not for the only time this year, we hope!) on December 1 to join one of Windsor’s most popular festive events. From 2PM to 4PM, Father Christmas will be joined by his faithful Reindeer herd as they make their way through the town centre.

If you can’t make the parade, there is plenty of time to catch Santa when he rests up at Daniel of Windsor’s wintry grotto. Santa’s Grotto is open from 1030AM – 430PM every weekend from 17 November – 17 December. (Entry is £7 and includes a present from Father C)

Christmas in Windsor

Grab your skates and take to the ice at Windsor’s premier skating rink. Windsor on Ice sits in the beautiful Alexandra Gardens, rubbing shoulders with the royal Castle.

If you’re more of a singer than a skater, why not join one of the many carol concerts happening around the Royal Borough throughout December?

On December 14 you could head to Castle Hill for the stunning, yearly open-air carolling that often draws in huge crowds from the surrounding area. Carols begin at 6PM, with music provided by the wonderful Band of The Household Cavalry.

There are also a number of advent and Christmas services being held at Windsor Castle’s very own St George’s Chapel. A full list of which can be found here.
