The best places to propose in Newcastle

Jan 16, 2019

There is no doubt that Newcastle Upon Tyne is an amazing city – named as the number one place to visit in 2018 by Rough Guide, it’s not surprising that you’d want to pop the question here.

With stunning views of the River Tyne, close proximity to the coast, and the best nightlife in the UK, Newcastle is a city that has everything. But with such a wide range of beautiful locations to choose from, how do you pick the perfect proposal spot?

Together with Angelic Diamonds, North East based retailer of diamond engagement rings, we explore the best proposal spots that this vibrant city has to offer:

The Baltic

The Quayside is one of Newcastle’s most famous and beautiful locations. In fact, this classic image of the Millennium Bridge overlooking the River Tyne is probably the most famous view in the city – and for good reason.

Offering spectacular views, the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is a repurposed flour mill that is now used to house an impressive collection of modern art. To make the most of this picture-perfect setting, you can head up to level five for an indoor viewing box, where you’ll be able to take in the sights of the Sage and Millennium Bridge.

If you fancy a treat afterwards, why not try SIX Restaurant on the top floor and celebrate in style.

Jesmond Dene Waterfall

Home to cosy picnic areas, pets’ corner, and a two-mile-long walk; Jesmond Dene is a haven of natural beauty and tranquillity. If you’re looking for a romantic spot to propose, look no further than this beautiful waterfall beyond the trees. After you’ve packed up your picnic blanket, you could head down to nearby Osbourne Road for a glass of bubbly or two!

Wylam Brewery in Exhibition Park

Just a half hour walk from the city centre, you’ll find Wylam Brewery, located in Exhibition Park in the Palace of Arts. Directly next to the Brewery is the Brewery Tap, which opens from Thursday to Sunday every week.

The Grand Hall also hosts live bands and regular food festivals, which are attended by some of the best independent eateries in the city. You can check out the upcoming events here.

The Brewery is situated on Exhibition Park lake – the perfect setting for a romantic evening, especially when the lake is lit up. Why not take a stroll from the entrance of the park up to the venue before proposing by the lake?

Centre for Life Planetarium

For a spot of stargazing away from the cold, you can find the North’s biggest planetarium at the Life Science Centre. You’ll be able to gaze up at the stars with your beloved and even experience real-time high definition space shows.

This is an ideal location for couples, after all, there’s nothing more romantic than asking your other half to be yours forever under a star-lit night sky.

Sycamore Gap, Henshaw

Sycamore Gap in Henshaw was crowned England’s ‘Tree of the Year’ in the Woodland Trust’s annual contest. This picturesque location is the most photographed spot in the whole of Northumberland’s national park and is home to a truly iconic tree.

Surrounded by a peaceful walking trail, you and your partner can stroll hand in hand whilst taking in the unique natural beauty of the area.

Alnwick, The Treehouse Restaurant

If you or your other is a fan of Harry Potter and would love a romantic proposal near Hogwarts, why not explore the beautiful gardens of Alnwick Castle, before heading down to The Treehouse Restaurant. This quirky location will give you both a magical dining experience like no other.

Lindisfarne, Holy Island

Situated just off the coast of Northumberland, Holy Island is a picturesque location with stunning views. This little tidal island is quite far from the centre of Newcastle, but the visit is well worth it.

You can even drive over, just be sure to check the tide information tables so that you know the safe times to cross.
