Feb 27, 2018

High fashion, affluent twenty-somethings, and Frank Lampard. Chelsea conjures up a fair The expansive beach isn’t the only reason to visit Southend. This classic seaside town has enough museums and galleries to keep even the most discerning of culture buffs entertained.

Central Museum

If you were to ask a local for their favourite hotspots for arts and culture in Southend, it’s likely that the Central Museum would be near the top of their list. Take a journey through the history of south-east Essex and discover the area as you never knew before.

Southend’s Central Museum is home to many artefacts and exhibits showcasing life in the town through the ages.

The Museum building is something of a historical wonder in and of itself, having formerly housed the early 20th century Southend Library.

The Museum also houses Southend’s very own planetarium, the only public Planetarium in SE England outside of London. Explore the night sky and learn about the expanse of space on one of the Planetarium’s many regular talks, live shows and presentations.

Art on the beach

Drop in at the Focal Point Gallery for the best in contemporary visual arts.

Southend’s premier art space, the Gallery exhibits the best in local talent and up-and-coming creatives and gives you a chance to get in touch with that inner critic.

Settle in for a film screening, or wander around the artspace admiring the latest solo exhibitions and ever-changing displays.

Focal Point can be found on the bottom floor of Southend’s The Forum building.

The Beecroft Art Gallery sports a collection of over 2000 works, ranging from Dutch paintings to 20th century women’s fashion.

There is a hefty focus on showcasing local artists and landscapes of Southend’s famous Pier and beachfront.

For those who enjoy rifling through the vintage stands at the local charity store, the Gallery’s fine collection of costumes and womenswear will probably be a godsend.

Not for sale of course, but it’s interesting to map the changes to fashion over the years with a good rummage through the exhibition.
