The historic village of Cookham is just 3.5 miles north of Maidenhead and perfect for a relaxing weekend afternoon.
Heralded as one of the nation’s richest villages, the charming parish sits along the banks of the Thames and has historically been a favoured haunt of eminent artists and authors.
Amongst the many cafes, restaurants and independent shops that makeup Cookham’s condensed High Street is the Stanley Spencer Gallery. Located in a former Methodist Chapel, the Gallery exhibits more than 120 works by one of the greatest British artists of the 20th Century.
One of Cookham’s most notable residents, he regarded the village as “a holy suburb of heaven”.
Timbered frames and traditional English country cottages rub shoulders in this picturesque setting, and the short walk to nearby Marlow is a favourite of those looking to stretch their legs.
Despite its size, Cookham is rich in history. The village is home to the Bel and the Dragon; the popular free house is said to be one of the oldest in England and boasts a long timeline stretching back to 1417.
Kenneth Grahame, author of the classic “Wind in the Willows” is another of Cookham’s most famous sons and the vistas of the River Thames passing through the village are said to have been his primary influence when penning the iconic children’s book.
Be sure to climb the short hike up Winter Hill to enjoy the finest views of the surrounding scenery and the panoramas that inspired Grahame as a young author.
With plenty to see and do, historic Cookham is a wonderful short escape into rural England.
