Things to Do in Watford
Watford, on the outskirts of central London, is a town fabled for paper, hornets and Harry Potter. Despite its small size, there is plenty to see and do in the town. Here are some of our favourite things to see and do in Watford:
Cassiobury Park is the largest of Watford’s open green spaces. Spanning 190 acres, the park occupies the former grounds of Cassiobury House.
Despite the house being demolished in 1927, the rolling lawns of Cassiobury remain one of the town’s most popular spots.
Perfect for picnics and Autumnal walks, the grounds are well renowned as some of the best-planted in the country. Home to a host of rare plants, this wooded greenbelt is a hotbed for local wildlife.
Keep an eye out for the miniature gauge railway making its way around the park, and the finely carved artwork of the ‘Owl Tree’.
Speaking of trees, Watford is a town known for its printworks. In the years leading up to WWII, the town was the largest printing centre on the planet.
The most successful of the Watford print companies were Oldhams Press. The iconic green spire of the former Printworks building is a key component of the local skyline.
The 20th century landmark is now home to the national newspaper company, Trinity Media.
Wizards & Hornets
Any wander through the centre of town will take you past Watford’s giant bee sculpture. Well, hornet. This artistic insect is a reference to “the Hornets”, the nickname for high-flying football team Watford FC.
On the point of flying, the nearby Leavesden Aerodrome is now home to Leavesden Film Studios, and one of the UK’s premier tourist attractions; Harry Potter World.
This area north of Watford served as the shooting location for many of the iconic sets from the popular film series.
Now, as part of the Warner Bros. Studio Tour, fans can step into the magical world of Harry Potter and explore the beautiful sets and the huge collection of props for themselves.
